I don't think one can truly appreciate INXS unless one is up-close and personal with the band in a really intimate atmosphere. As Hutchence says oh so eloquently, "You've got to be able to feel the sweat of the audience." Though I won't comment on that one, you get the general drift. The experience is just completely more overwhelming, because you take an active role in the concert, rather than just observing like a mere zombie (like say, a certain U2 overhyped tour..) It turns out that he has recently become an uncle: brother Andrew and his wife had welcomed a baby girl, Josephine, into the world just four days previously. "I'm looking forward to catching up and seeing my new niece," he says happily. INXS had also just finalized the mixes for _Full Moon Dirty Hearts_, scheduled for release in early November. Their eleventh album in 16 years, _Full Moon Dirty Hearts_ has been a bit of a soul-searching experience for Farriss and INXS. "In many ways, instead of a step forward it was more of a step back," begins the guitarist and synth man. "We wanted to be more of a pub band, I guess, when we were making this record and we spent a lot of time talking about it and mentally regressed a little bit." During the recording of the album INXS were also close to living together again, something they hadn't done since their early days. Almost roommates, they resided and recorded in close proximity on the tiny island of Capri. "In a way (it made things tighter), but in another way it brought out a lot more discussion about what kind of record we wanted to make," Farriss says. "It brought out a lot more aggression out of ourselves." Grinding funk is a good way to describe the overall sound of _Full Moon Dirty Hearts_. Tracks like "Make Your Peace" have that trademark sexual throb to it, while "I'm Only Looking" is a slick tune that lends Michael Hutchence's voice a Bryan Ferry-like timbre. The insistent grooves are pure INXS, yet _Full Moon Dirty Hearts_ is unlike previous releases: the minimalist mix of "Kill the Pain," Hutchence pushing the upper ranges of his vocals on "Make Your Peace" and "Viking Juice," a poem called "The End Of Rock And Roll" surrounded in music. Forget the little dig linking freshly squeezed Vikings and Hutchence's Danish girlfriend, Farriss says that this poem reveals the singer's feelings about rock's demise. At the moment, _Full Moon Dirty Hearts_ carries a wonderfully different feel for Farriss. "I love it. I hear something different every time," he enthuses. "There's a couple of songs we've played live so much already and we heard so many times in recording that I'm a little bit sick of, but about 99 per cent of the album I feel like I could never get sick of." Many of the album's songs were road tested during the "Get Out Of The House" pub crawl tour through Europe. Farriss says that it wasn't only the most fun they'd had in years, it was probably one of the best tours they'd ever done. "We feel a lot happier with ourselves at the moment. Before, when we were riding the sum of successes of _Kick_ and stuff, we were feeling a bit more like a machine doing things to make people happy for them, rather than ourselves," he says. "Now we're doing what we want to do." INXS start touring for _Full Moon Dirty Hearts_ at the end of October and anticipate hitting most of Canada's provinces. Look for dates in smaller, more intimate venues. Farriss says that always being called a stadium band really began to "get down our pants." At one point last year, it was rumoured that INXS would even split if they kept playing those enormous, anonymous halls. "We just needed something to motivate ourselves. I don't think we would have toured if someone suggested we keep doing arenas and stadiums," he maintains. "I don't think we would have gotten out of bed for it, if you know what I mean." One road perk that Farriss will admit to enjoying is the chance to play the world's most renowned golf courses. More than your typical weekend duffer, Farriss has all the toys - including the putting practice device. "Yeah, well, you know," he hedges, sounding a little sheepish. "Which one? The green one or the red one? It's better than throwing televisions out of hotel room balconies." -Taken from "What! Let's see how that old adage "The only bad publicity is no publicity" fares following this whole situation. I have a feeling the next INXS single will be quite huge as a result of all of this press... (unless it comes a long time from now.) 2) I was listening to LLT's the other night, and was struck by "Biting Bullets." Funny, the song's meaning never quite hit me before... 3) I currently have the following items for sale or trade (trades are preferred though!) If you see something you like - send email... Date: Tue, 28 Mar 1995 23:48:58 CST From: Jason Braddy X-UIDL: 796487191.009 Hi all... After going over my logs of ftp access and looking at how much space the old mail from this list is taking up on my account (about 20% of my disk quota if you care) I've decided to delete the archived messages and stop saving them from now on. It was a nice idea, but only about half a dozen or so people have ever downloaded any of them, and that doesn't justify the resources being used, especially since I've been running up against my meager disk quota a lot these days. If this upsets any of you, I apologize...I won't delete the existing archives until this weekend to give you a last chance to grab them, but after that they are bye-bye... Also, I'm going to be revamping my WWW site, making it mainly an info site for the list and a list of pointers to the other INXS resources out there...I know about Neil's site, so I will certainly have a link for it, but any other sites people know about would be good for me to know about so I can put them in and be somewhat complete...if I can get it to work, I'm also going to add the ability for people to send mail to the administrative address from the WWW page (although not all Web browsers have the ability to use forms, which is what I'll be using I think...) That's about it for now...oh, if anyone has any smallish graphics that they think would be suitable for the list page, let me know (please don't mail them to me though!)...I'd like to spice it up a little, with most people using graphical browsers these days... thanks, Jason List Moderator
