You are getting confused with 'Prehistoria', which was played before 'Soul Mistake' on the 1983 U.S. tour (as per your 'don't look at me' bootleg) and before 'Night of Rebellion' on the Australia tour. You will also find 'Prehistoria' on INXSIVE and the B-side to the Night of Rebellion single (which if anyone is deperate for this single I know someone who is selling one for $100 (Aust) which is what have to pay for this single it's so rare! Its such a tragedy about Princess Di and my heart goes out to her family and also to the family of the other people killed in the accident. (did everyone forget that other people died to??) I guess its hard to appreciate how bad it can get for celbs considering in Australia the media isn't to bad (certainately not as bad as the UK) Anyway on to INXS, I spent time at my parents house last weekend and whilst watching videos i found some INXS video clips and Rooms for the Memory. I also got a chance to listen to Move On and I'm Coming (Home) for the first time yesterday. Both are great songs!! Don't think for a minute that what I'm saying is in anyway concrete fact, I'm just guessing here and you might be interested. If there is any original metaphor 'motif' Michael would probably use it with his very own twist anyway. To me the following is what I thought about that song's lyric's after I heard it. Apparently Michael wrote the song on the ferry to the Isle of Capri. This leads one to believe he looked up in the sky where there was indeed a "full moon", also there was probably a mass of great black, some could say "dirty" clouds in the sky and a "deep blue sea" etc. So most of the song is literal rather than metaphorical. Except as you seem to suggest, when he refers to "Dirty-Hearts". Here he seems to be referring to in somewhat pessimistic terms, the deeds done wrong to him or someone by the collective negative (persons) on this planet. The negative being all the "dirty hearts" which are not specified so clearly. It aids me when thinking about this song, to analyse other songs where he uses the word "dirty" like "Days of Rust" - Dirty money, washed rich. Suck me honey, it's a cinch :"Men and Women" - Dirty little secrets, kept behind my back:"Girl on Fire" - Out of the shadows, comes a dirty song:"Communication" - I won't leave this...dirty place. In most of these songs he uses the word in it's most negative/cynical/pessimistic form (a word is made negative by the words that surround it by my definition). In Full Moon I think it's the same theme, Michael's biggest inspiration lyrically on the last few albums has been without a doubt, the press (media) the knocker's etc. Michael in the song "Full Moon Dirty Hearts" is only saying something common to us all on occasions. The situation he was in literally was as good as it gets sometimes ("that's all we can hope for"), he was alone (or maybe with his girl) as we all wanna be when in a mood of despair. "The press and hassles of the day were millions of miles away" (that's my own lyric by the way), it was night time and there was a full moon with a dirty big black cloud that mirrored his mood. You only have to replace the word "full" with "half" and suddenly the song wouldn't make sense. You can hope for more than just half a moon - Sooner or later that full moon will come around again and we can all escape and get away for a small while - "I swam away that day". Whoa!!! what the hell did I just write By the way Michael (Chen), was it you who tabbed "Time", well done it's my third fave song, thanx. > BTW love the way you changed song quotes like " i love it brother , just > keep talking " >Lynn Lynn what's BTW (I won't say forgive my ignorance cause you already found (somebody gave you) the medicine for that). I consider myself a lyricist, musician, I've written about 250 poems/lyrics and 20 songs. When I'm listening to INXS (or others) songs and I happen to find myself singing or humming along (I can't sing very well mind you, but,.... that never stopped anyone. And If you want to write music you have to disregard your own imperfections), I quite often change the lyrics to suit any particular mood. I developed this skill because I have listened to each and every INXS song, bar a few, more than 1000+ times each. The melodies are echoing around the inner mechanics of my mind! It's an invaluable learning tool to be so attached to one band so ardently. To be able to create words over the top of a melody (vversa) so quickly is a fun thing to do, if and when you get there that is. By the way Lynn and other's I think Deliver Me is winning the by now infamous 'flame war'! HA HA! We shall fight at the concerts, We shall....... XS wins anytime any place. But in a cruel twist and quite unashamedly, peace!... Yes peace, has, been found through the thoughtlessly, unprovoked and casual slaughter of an innocent bystander - 'Men and Women' (Hompf!). (DON'T anybody take me SERIOUSLY here I'm trying to be funny through xssive use of overstatements). This Deliver Me thing is great fun! Men and Women is the song that most of all walks furtherest away from the INXS norm. Their is no escape in it. However I love the song, and the album, but I'm biased I'm a professional pessimist and a constant cynic....most of the time. That's my Twenty dollars worth. Toby Creswell in Rolling Stone 92'?? said it - 'Men and Women' was undoubtedly the best song on the album. He also stated the album 'Welcome to Wherever You Are', was the best since KICK (Shudder to think what he thinks about X then) and gave it 3 and a 1/2 out of 5. Not that any of you care what Toby Creswell said 5 years ago. I just think he's one of the (credible) music journos who followed INXS pretty closely. >..........all started years ago, when I was a very young lass watching Mtv, >when they actually played music. It's so much like the X-files. AImee you were a "true fan" before me. Although I remember listening to a song I didn't recall it's name, on a tiny radio back in 82/83? It affected me somehow but not enough to ponder the further investigation of which band it was or what the song's name was. In retrospect I can now inform you it was 'Don't Change'. I didn't really 'get' what music was about back then, it barely raised my eyebrow. WARNING: THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH CONTAINS TWO (2) CENSORED PROFANITIES One day in 87/88, on a weekend, it was the usual, I was sitting with my younger brother (some yards away) watching some video hits show. Suddenly....ho, hum.. shazam!! this 'intricate' drum pattern descends from the television, images stream across the screen like something is approaching. The this guy trying (succeeding) to look cool simply whispers "Come over Here". Literally inviting you (me) to listen. Suddenly the reason why he wants you to listen is extremely obvious.... DENT DENT DENT...DENENENENENENE NENT. It was at this stage that I muttered in typical, confused teenage fashion "What kinda s##t is this"! He simply stated "dunno"....Ever so slowly the rhythm and the 'hook' like muted guitar was catching my senses. My feet started tapping and my head started to rock YEAH I was chair dancing!! It was at this stage that again in the abovementioned teenspeak I uttered my first words of devotion to INXS. Only my brother was there, but I woulda told anyone. ""Whatever it is it's F##### brilliant!"". Well, I didn't claim to be a poet by that stage so what can I say. From there I listened intently to the radio for this song, I had to find out who made this sound and how I could possess it! I got a couple of e-mails referencing the show but no, zero, nada, concrete information. Neil has posted to his web site that the date changed from 03 September to 05 September and now has listed a venue. I tried to find out what is going on in York, PA, and behold, it's a damn Livestock Fair. This fair is unusual in that hosts *star* performers before its grandstand. ... I can see it now, "Yup, I winna' the fa'r an' got me a sida beef. An' wall I was thar' some crazy boys from Austral'a was thar' hoppin' 'round all o'er the place playin' 'lectreec geetars an' stuff." Yikes! Is this thing going be all right? Is this show really going to take place with the band having to be in Atlanta the following night, some 12 hours away for their stage gear by truck? If everything is for real, this looks like it might be a very intimate show. It will be outside (I assume), but a relatively small crowd for sure. It is my intent to call the event organizers tomorrow and I will report what I find out to the LIST. Meanwhile, are there any other interested parties out there who have any additional information? Any is very much appreciated. This is a fair road trip for me (3+ hours), but I want to do it if the show is going to happen. I'm shocked no one has posted about the show yet (or at least it hasn't come across my computer yet.) Let me start by saying, Abby, John, Teresa, Dennis, Rhonda, Kim, and everyone else, it was great to meet you all! In a word, Saturday was AMAZING!!! I was the VIP person for the show (thanks Mary!) and was to meet everyone at 4:30. We were all pretty much there, but there were no passes yet. FInally, they got me my pass around 5:15 or so, and we all went in. I went backstage, found the appropriate people, and got the passes for everyone. While I was back there, I got to see the tour bus, meet their wardrobe lady, see the equipment being set up, etc. We initially thought we'd all get to meet them before the show, but as it turns out, the radio station that was sponsoring the show (Riversplash '97 by WRVR 101.1, I think) hogged all the before meet-and-greet time, so we all pretty much hung out in the backstage "holding area." The band went on around 9:15. I was in the photo pit at the beginning, so I had a really great view of everything. The set was pretty much like Brian described from the KC show. I'd been a bit worried about Michael's ankle, but when he appeared on stage, he had no noticeable pain or limp, nor did he mention it during the show. He spent the majority of EW writhing around the stage, facing the rest of the band, and only toward the end began to really face the audience. Michael was wearing a nice black suit with a matching vest, a white shirt and a black and white vertically striped tie knotted in a full Windsor, After the first few songs, he took off the jacket, vest, and tie, then changed his belt (he originally had on a woman's belt, wanted to wear a man's-I have no idea how/why the whole belt thing happened) and introduced his wardrobe guy to the audience. Later, he took off the white shirt, revealing a black tank top with a golden dragon on it. Kirk had on blue (?) velvet pants, a red-orange shirt, and at first, a brown leather jacket. TIm wore black pants, a chartreuse jacket, and a big black cowboy hat. It looked like Gary had on black jeans and a blue shirt. I'm not sure what Jon or Andrew had on; they were too far away, and it appeared to be all black clothing. Maybe someone else can help me out here? The show went on for about 1 hr, 45 mins. It was really well done, no problems that I'm aware of. Michael went into the audience several times, which really seemed to please everyone. Brian's comment about Michael's ability to bring women to orgasm with a look is certainly a pretty accurate one. During Mediate (he had no cheat sheet, blank or otherwise) he was about 4 feet from me. There were probably around 30 other females of varying ages around me, and as he sang he smoked a cigarette very slowly. I'm not a smoker, but let me tell you, after the song was over, I needed a cigarette--or at least, I wanted to be *his* cigarette :-) After the show, we all went backstage. I got them to each sign my shirt, got some great pictures, and got to hang out and talk to everyone, especially Tim and Kirk. They are fabulous, or, as Kirk would say, "Shagdelic!" I had my picture taken with Michael and Kirk, got a kiss on the lips from Mike (my inner 14 year old died!), a hug and kiss on the cheek from Tim, and a hug from Kirk. Also, as a HUGE Dogs in Space fan, I had a really bizarre moment. When Abby, Teresa and I first approached Michael he was all alone over at the bar mixing a drink for himself and singing to himself. We asked him to sign our shirts, he said he would, but not before he had a cigarette. Then he turned directly to me and asked "Have you got a cigarette?" with the exact same tone, timing, etc. as how he asks Anna for one at the party in the movie when the Girl is asking Anna what it's like to be in love with "that thing." I Immediately felt like I'd been zapped into the movie, and it was all I could do to not answer with her responding line. In the end, someone gave him a Marlboro and a light, and he signed our stuff for us. I don't know about when he was having is pic made with Abby and Teresa, but when he was posing with me he sort of growled--very interesting! After talking with Michael, I went over and spoke with Tim. He said he loved the List, and wishes he could be on it more, but touring sort of makes him a busy man. He does seem to enjoy it a lot, though. It was very cool to talk to him and have him remember various things I've said, my maiden name, etc. Now I know he really does read and remember what we all do! Kirk is a riot! We hung out with him until everyone started to leave. Somehow, I ended up in a discussion with him about the movie "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery." He told me he's seen it about 10 times, has the script and video, and can quote the entire thing. I don't doubt it. He also gave me a few glasses of some really great wine, that I'm afraid I drank a little too quickly. Oh well. After a while, the crowd began to thin out, and so we all left. Mitch (my husband) and I went back to the Ritz to see them. When we got there, there weren't too many other people around, and Michael was the only one in the bar area. We didn't stay too long, as there was some sort of wedding reception going on and the place was full of people in tuxes and gown, while we had on jeans and t's. In all, it was a fabulous evening I'll never forget! I was so glad that the band were as cool and nice and funny as I'd always hoped. We got some really great pictures that I'll be sending to Mary this week, so I'm sure one or two may end up in an upcoming issue of the fanclub newsletter. I'll also be putting together a Web page in the next few days, and I'll let you all know when it's up and running with all the concert and after-show pics. Here in Dallas, there is a radio station called 93.3 The Zone (the same station that brought us the INXS concert at www.audionet.com. I've been listening to them a lot lately and they always advertise how they want people to go to their website and leave feedback, so I did. One of the thing I said to them was that I was happy that they were giving INXS a fair amount of airplay (which they have) but that I was dissapointed at how they play songs off of Kick too often and that they should play more of their recent stuff. I also told them what time of day I listen to the radio, because they tape their shows when I usually listen (12 - 2 in the morning) and I was tired of them re-using tapes. Finally, at the end they ask people what their five favorite albums are, and the first one I put was WTWYA. Tonight, I was coming home and they had a new tape going this evening and right about 1:15 they played Not Enough Time. I just thought that it was really cool that they put a song on their late night tape off an album I asked them to play and even put the song on the tape at a time when I listen. So, aside from me getting to tell a really cool story, I just want to plug the radio station again. If you live in Dallas, listen to 93.3 The Zone and go to the website (www.933thezone.com) and tell them what you want to hear because they REALLY are paying attention to what people send to them and they really do support INXS. Anyway, St. Louis was an absolute BLAST!! The band sounded the best I've ever hear them, and that's saying a lot, since there's no such thing as a bad INXS concert. They were so full of energy, and every song sounded absolutely perfect. Like Nanci said, not one cheat sheet during the whole show, and every word to Mediate was right on. Michael, I would say, spent about a third of the concert in the crowd and even went up to the second tier of seats to sing Never Tear Us Apart (much to the delight of a group of young girls who quickly surrounded him). He was also very talkative--delivered a "monologue" while he was changing out of his woman's belt (you know, you've got six guys up here from Australia, and so if it weren't for the band we'd all be criminals! so go out and buy our new CD if you don't want to see me end up a junkie on the street! [somehow, I don't ever see that happening!]) They were also pretty playful. At one point Michael played the keyboards while Andrew sang (it sounded familiar, but I couldn't place my finger on it--anyone know a song that Andrew sings?) until Andrew said, what the f** am I doing? and switched back. Also, for a couple of songs Jon was chair dancing away in the back! Afterwards, as Nanci and Teresa explained, was great. I still can't get over how friendly they all are!! For example, right when we got there, Tim immediately offered to get us all beers; Kirk, the HUGEST sweetheart as always (as was Tim), asked us how we liked our seats and said, "what happened to you! I saw you standing in the front for the first few songs, but then you disappeared!' (d** security!), and Michael was more than happy to pose for pictures with everybody. Oh, I almost ith you! The bass line is really funky, and the palm muted guitar sounds great.. Reaches Me!... lovely chorusy bit :-) The drums and rythm on this song are so contagous and get me moving all the time! Just the other day I was looking through a sales 'bin' and their was the usual KICK, FULL MOON etc then low and behold a cassette - New Sensation, Extended Verion (I didn't have this particular recording). I asked the guy at the counter how much and he said $1 dollar thanks. The picture of the girl on the sleeve's worth more than that, what a bargain. People are responsible only for their own actions, not those of others. Certainly one should not sanction others' evil acts, but there are different levels of sanction. The equations are complicated, but blanket statements like the above merely muddle the issue. For example, some people (myself included) have never read a tabloid (British or otherwise), so these people have not sanctioned the paparazzi in any fashion. Well, enough philosophy for today... I have to agree with Nanci - the show was incredible!!!!! Thanks for everything!!!! A special "Thanks" to Kirk for coming through with some great tix for us (Shagadelic!). However, we decided that since we were such INXS fanatics, we deserved to sneak down to the front row. We were able stay there for about 7 or 8 songs? (I don't know how long it was - it seemed like time was standing still, yet flying by, if you know what I mean) before we were asked to go back to our seats. Needless to say, we made it back down to the first couple of rows more than once. While we were in the front row, Kirk noticed us right away and started mugging for our camera, and sticking out his tongue at us, and stuff. Let me say - they kicked ass! Michael was super sexy, and all over the place. I still get chills every time I listen to the beginning of "Elegantly Wasted". Abby and I lost our voices from screaming so loud. After the show, we were able to go back to their dressing room, where Kirk immediately came up and gave me a big hugg and a kiss on the lips, and asked if we received the tix okay. What a sweetie!! We then took some great pictures with Andrew, Tim, and Gary. As Nanci said, Michael was singing to himself (Nanci or Abby - do you remember what he was singing???), making drinks, and just being cool. I told him that we missed him in Milwaukee, and he told me he was sorry, but he hurt his ankle. I told him I was sorry about that, and I hoped his ankle felt better, and he said that it did, thank you. I then received a kiss (on the lips) :) and he signed my shirt (which I was wearing at the time). I started to laugh, and when he asked why, I told him that it tickled. He then proceeded to doodle in a very strategic place on my shirt, to make me laugh even harder. We also took the most awesome picture together (thanks Abby)! :) We then hung with Nanci, Mitch, John, Abby and Kirk for awhile. Kirk asked us to meet them back at the hotel for drinks, which we did, but we got a little lost along the way. (Nanci, we must have just missed you). Sunday morning, Abby and John took us back to the airport, where who did we run into? Kirk, Michael, Jon, Tim, Andrew, Gary, JD, Shelly.... We chatted with them for awhile (they are so sweet). They were on their way to Vancouver, with a stop in Seattle. We then had some breakfast, and Michael wandered in to where we were eating. After he ate, he stopped to say Goodbye to us, which was so sweet. All in all - the weekend was the best! I can't give out enough thanks to Nanci and Mitch, John and Abby (please thank Tom for us), Kirk, and the rest of the band!!!!!! -Teresa Date: Tue, 02 Sep 1997 18:52:59 -0500 From: Teresa Velasquez To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Subject: [INXS] Atlanta Tickets Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Hi All, I'm inquiring if anybody has an extra ticket for the upcoming show in Atlanta. This is one of the best interviews I've seen on TV and Michael also spoke about the media and how much they hound celebrities.I was proud of the way he handled the interview, so cool and didn't simply use it as a "bitch session" about the media. He even told of one incident at a Restraunt when a photgrapher dilerately pushed over Pixie (one of Paula's kids), just to get her to cry and try and sell a story along the lines of "Life with Paula and Michael." What really got my attention was when he looked directly into the camera, slightly raised his voice (But angrily, but more serious), and extended his arms and said "Look, you ther public are being ripped off." And I'm serious when I say he would know. After all, the media have been hounding him for a while now, and what better person to get for a special about the Media than the man who knows them well? - Glenn Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 11:15:37 -0700 From: glenn@internet-australia.com (glenn) To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Subject: Re: [INXS] Odds and Ends in OZ Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Justin Rice wrote: > (snip) > Regrettably, If ARIA charted INXS on the number of people off-loading > their old recordings, INXS would chart rather impressively. Blue Heelers is the most popular show in Australia going by the ratings each week, but I don't like it. The best Australian t.v. soap was Echo Point! The show really wasn't as bad as everyone said. So if its shown on t.v anywhere in the world please email me. As for song of the week, since it was a single here in Australia I've always imagined what the video for this song would look like if they had made one for it. Poor choice of a single by Deluxe (hence it didn't chart), they only released it because INXS were leaving to go to WEA. 'Fairweather Ahead' would have been a much better choice IMO. Matthew. These are fairly expensive machines, so I wouldn't suggest going out and buying one. You might want to check at a special tape duplication service (they do exist), or better, at the foreign language department of the largest university in your area. PAL is used all over Europe, so language departments tend to have at least one of these machines lying around. Good luck! Where I sit at work, there is an executive assistant who is Spanish. I finally put two and two together and asked her what those exact words translate to. She got a very softened look on her face and went "Ohh" as if remembering a romantic moment long ago (this is why you don't ask these things at work). Anyway, she said the song means "Sing and don't cry". Sort of like what someone would say to you to comfort you if you were sad. Or if they were trying to cheer you up. Hope this helps. And yes, I'm very sure that I am accurate on this one. Nick Steph wrote: > At 01:28 AM 9/3/97 -0700, you wrote: > >>it was the spanish song, wasn't it? To all interested parties, list member MaryLynn (SKEETS1008@aol.com) and myself have dug up the following information: -What: INXS concert -Who: INXS, of course, band of world renown greatness -When: 05 September 1997 -Where: York Fair Grounds, York, PA. I'm still figuring out how to get there. -Why: For your entertainment pleasure. -How: Tickets on sale now. Direct line 717-848-2033, but only between 9am-6pm, Eastern time. General information number is 717-848-2596. Now for the boring details... Both MaryLynn and I have made contact with Fair Grounds. The operator kept wanting to put me through to ticket sales when I was asking for ticket information. Once there, all I ever got was a solid busy signal. I said, "STOP! All I need is a little, teenie-weenie bit o' blessed information. I don't want to buy tickets yet." So the operator answered my questions. That was nice of her. MaryLynn and I both got info. that says, "Yes, INXS is definitely on for Friday night!" I tried to ask the operator too many questions though; I started to feel guilty for using her time. The tickets are $15.00 and $18.00. Apparently the $18.00 tickets are for the "center grandstand" and the $15.00 tickets are for...? I couldn't quite figure that out. She was speaking with an aire of intimate familarity with the situation while I was trying to decipher "the talk". Anyway, I found out that the price of admission to the fair is $4.00(mandatory). The price for parking is $4.00(mandatory). The direct ticket line is 717-848-2033. The hours for at least Thursday are 9AM-6PM. As mentioned above, I got nothing but busy signals when I dailed direct or was transferred. The operator on Tuesday said that "all three lines were busy" before attempting a transfer. So, looks like pretty much a crap shoot for tickets. I just can't imagine that there's going to be too large a crowd there and am contemplating waiting until that evening to buy. The only danger is if there is some big "unknown-to-the-omniscient-INXS-list-members" radio-oriented promotion out of Harrisburg, York, or Lancaster. That would undoubtedly claim a big chunk of quality tickets. What do you suppose the chances of that are? ANYONE out there know someone in HARRISBURG, YORK, or LANCASTER? The whole show is on such short notice, I'm not sure what to do? Do I try to spend half of my work day trying to buy tickets, or just show up and hope for the best? Suggestions are welcome. MaryLynn (from the southeastern PA) has suggested a meeting for anyone going to this show. I'll be coming from the northernmost part of VA. Is there anybody else interested? I can give you my work number through private e-mail (800 number), and we can work to set something up. It will be short notice, but we will see what we can do, eh? First of all, I agree with this comment that Sharon has made. Also, while I know Erik wasn't wishing death on Charles, looking at the possible outcome as a positive thing as if it should have happened to another person is not something to be taken lightly. BTW, word is that Diana has more Royal blood in her than Charles himself. > Do you really think those two boys are better off without a mother? I sincerely > hope that you were just having a bad day when you wrote this, and I suggest > you take five minutes to think of all the great things this lady did for > the "not so lucky" people of this world. Again, I agree. Look at the Aids Victims, Land Mine campaigns that Diana has actually gotten down on her knees and interacted with. As for her two Boys, she showed them how everyday people live. She gave them money and brought them clothes. This to me, shows that she does actually care for for everyday people. Anyway, this is way off topic, so lets relate it to INXS. Lets go back to Michael Hutchence's Australian Witness interview : "The media is something celebreties put up with." And like I said before : he would know. He's probably one of the most famous Australians there is and he's put up with all kinds of stuff in the past. Heck, he punched a photographer one day, so what else can I say? I'm hoping to end this Priness Diana thread, so in closing, I'd like to quote the first couple of lines from an INXS song : "In a room above a busy street, the echos of a life. The Fragments and the accidents seperated by the incidents." Okay, so it's not the greatest lyrics in the world, but what I mean is this : If anything is shown from this media coverage from Dianas death, I seriously hope it's how frail and precious a human life truly is. - Glenn Date: Thu, 04 Sep 1997 16:36:46 -0700 From: glenn@internet-australia.com (glenn) To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Subject: Re: [INXS] INXS SOTW#52 - Night of Rebellion (And aussie soaps) Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Matthew Marsland wrote: > > At 12:30 AM 2/09/97 +0100, you wrote: > > >This song, no matter how times I play it reminds me of an Australian > >police soap, I think its called Blue Healers.... its very Aussie outback > >IMHO... > > Yes it is called Blue Heelers...I can sort of see the the connection > between the theme music and the intro to 'Night of Rebellion'. I don't see what is so bad about the album. In fact I think its great! I have seen a lot of references to it from list members who don't like it. Also whenever the band is asked about it they simply say that it was made in their wilderness period. Its as if they agree that its a weak album. I dissagree strongly. I think the album has some very strong points. The direction they took in some songs worked really well. Songs like Viking Juice, I'm only looking and freedom deep are different yet work really well. They haven't distanced themselves as much as some songs from WTWYA and EW but at the same time the songs all seem to work. Some of the songs off WTWYA and EW are quite different but some of them don't really work. I'm not saying that those two are bad albums (in fact WTWYA is my favourite). I'm also not saying that FMDH doesn't have weak points. I just wanted to stick up for the album. I think it is a great INXS album that has received undeserved bad publicity. Any other opinions? In some ways, I feel it is their best album. Time and Make Your Peace are two of the most hard hitting rock songs they have made and I think they are just fabulous tunes. Please... and Full Moon are more bluesy than what they typically do and I like that kind of music. Also, the album is much more varied than anything they've done to date and the album really shows breadth of the band's musical capability. On the opposite side of the coin, they state in the liner notes that the album was a bit rushed and looking at the production on most of the album, it shows. Most of the songs don't sound as well polished as what we typically see from the band. To a certain extent, I can see where sometimes they were looking for a more raw sound, but they achieved the effect much better in EW by polishing the songs before they actually played them. They way they did it in FMDH sounds more like they were taping an improvisational session than an album. And then, along side both of these comments is the experimentation. Without the experimentaiton they did, I doubt that the album would be as varied as it is, so I have to look at it as a good thing. On the other hand, it seems that sometimes they forgot to mix their experiments in with something more solid. I'm Only Looking has nice fast guitar rift backed up by a bass line, but lyrics just sort of lie there on top of it. Sometimes I can't tell if the song is trying to be upbeat (like Suicide Blonde) or a moderately paced ballad (like Freedom Deep, which is done MUCH better). Overall though, if I were to rank the albums, I would probably place it fourth behind WTWYA, Kick, and LLT. Davy J. Sorry to cut out most of your post, Colin, but here's my 5 cents worth: I was one of those people that looked at the cover of Full Moon Dirty Hearts and shuddered at first. The band looked like they had decided to explore the darker side to themselves and I thought they were trying to impersonate some more hard core music celebrities. (as one magazine put it, Micheal looks like Lenny Kranvitz' dad) I picked up the CD for $9 at HMV, so I thought the album was going to be terrible, but upon listening to it, I was wrong. The songs are great, but I knew there was some reason I didn't like the CD... What I think it was is the appearance of the CD. (A minor gripe, I know, but thats just me..) For instance, look at the lyrics and tracklist. The writing is messy and makes the whole CD look (as much as I hate to use this word) cheap. Also, take into consideration that there are photocopies stapled inside the CD inlay, which looks like a two muinute job. I know this is absolutely NOTHING to do with the music, but if anyone asked what I didn't like about the CD, this little thing would have to be it. - Glenn From: "sharon wolstenholme" To: Subject: [INXS] Aussies...INXS Clip On Rage Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 21:25:57 +1000 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Not sure if anyone will be interested because of the time, but here goes anyway... I mean, the thing I like most about INXS is they are able to experiment with different types of sounds. They love music and want to achieve a higher level of sophistication with every successive album. I know WTWYA is a lot different from their previous albums, but it is my favorite album (OF ALL TIME) because the band mixed the deep bass tracks with deep vocals. The result is clearly INXS yet it is completely different. In the same way, FMDH was an album which showed the extent INXS was willing to go to create new sounds. I think the band dismissed the song as being inferior because they probably want to distance themselves from such a commercial failure. Nevertheless, the album has songs like Please (which is so damn cool with Ray Charles) and Freedom Deep. I probably listen to this CD the most in my college dorm because the songs are lively and unique. I like the rawness of the song because it follows the experimental quality of the album. By the way, my favorite song off of WTWYA is Communication. Does anyone else agree with me? Anyway, on to FMDH. I personally like only a couple of songs off of the album (Time, Messenger, Days or Rust, The Gift) Perhaps that's because of the traditional guitar sounds. While like any INXS album, I can listen to the whole thing. Unlike other INXS albums, I have no problem hitting the skip button on the CD player for certain songs. I would have to say that INXS certainly were in some sort of funky stage when they made FMDH. I've heard that it was to be part of a double album with WTWYA. I often wonder if they didn't just record a bunch of songs and put them all on tape rather than taking only the best and making one CD. I realize that I'm going to get slammed for saying this, but I often feel that they could have taken the best songs off of FMDH, WTWYA, and EW and made one awesome double CD. Songs like Viking Juice and Questions while interesting and artistic belong on the flip side of a 45, not the header for an album. I'm no producer, but I know what I like to listen to. I consider myself one of the all time INXS fans and after 7 concerts it should be obvious I like what I hear. I personally feel that they haven't come close to the sound quality of X with the last 3 albums. True there are great songs off of the 3 recent albums, but none has the awesome 5 song line up that X has to start the CD! I used to tell my friends that if I died I wanted a copy of UTC buried with me because it was my least favorite album. Well, perhaps today I'd ask for a copy of LBL, but it wouldn't hurt if they threw a copy of the lower quality songs off of WTWYA, FMDH, and EW on there. I look for the day when INXS will go back to putting the experimental stuff on the b-sides and putting only the best stuff on the albums. Just look at The Swing, LLT, Kick, and X. (yes there are weak songs on those too, but only one song per album at most.) To each his or her own I suppose. But I have to imagine somebody out there feels the same way about combining the best off the last 3 albums into one album. Lastly remember, I could listen to every INXS song in a row and not be bored, I just think you need to call a rose "a rose." -Nick From: "BPRice" To: Subject: Re: [INXS] FMDH - Whats the Fuss. Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 12:11:45 -0600 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu I think a lot of it has to do with it's failure (in America) commercially. It's just a sub-concious reaction. A lot of people have dissed it as INXS trying to be grunge, but will anybody DARE tell me that songs like FMDH, Please..., Freedom Deep, and most of the other songs sound like grunge? The only two songs even REMOTELY similar to grunge are Days of Rust and Viking Juice, and that's a stretch. I get the feeling too many people are judging it by the cover; it's one of the most consistent potshots taken at the album. Though it did poorly in America, FMDH was successful in other countries, charting in the Top 10 in the UK and doing VERY well in South America (an INXS bastion if there ever was one, and one that the band should feel OBLIGATED to tour in). Also, during an interview on VH-1 around the time of the Greatest Hits, when asks which albums were their favorite, Michael said the last two albums (WtWYA and FMDH). And the bands own attitude towards FMDH seems to extend only to the difficulties they had in making it, not in the music itself.
