All very well Mr Hutchence, but did Geldof >plant those drugs under your bed aswell?' There has been a similar article in the London TNT magazine on Monday. This is how it read:... (and a BEAUTIFUL pic of Mike too) HUTCH BLASTS 'SATAN' BOB IT'S on again. The feud between the Geldof and Yates/Hutchence camps is up and running again after INXS frontman Michael Hutchence branded Sir Bob as Satan last week. Hutchence, who is the current beau of Geldof's former wife, Paula Yates, sensationally made the comments in reference to the couples bitter divorce last year. Outspoken Hutchence was typically straight to the pont, saying that the public had been fooled by PR propaganda presenting Geldof with a saintly image. Hutchence said:"He is Satan. If only you knew the truth." "Bob was taken beyond human to sainthood, and if you left him you are bad, you are wrong. He has completely manipulated everyone." Geldof, who gained fame as the lead singer with 70's rockers The Boomtown Rats and the creator of Live Aid, and Yates were involved in an ugly public divorce last year before settling after Geldof scribbled an agreement on a napkin. It seems that it could be 'gloves off' once more. Dunno who has been to the Rock Circus lately, but something that I found really amusing was the way they set up Bob leaning against the wall, glaring at Mike with folded arms, and Mike being on stage in his usual laid back mode, sort of hanging onto the microphone, right hand in the air... Something to see! Needless to say, I took LOADS of pictures. And right above this Mike / Bob scene they have loads of TV screens with 'Sir Bob' spread over all of them, with a clip from an interview with Bob. I thought it was all so funny - the whole sort of ironic / sarcastic setup? It could be aired today (Sunday) on MMM's Homegrown program. Does anyone know for sure? Tim also said that the band had a soft spot for Adelaide. The feeling's mutual Tim! On page 125 of today's Sunday Mail, there's an image from a new CD-ROM about Aus music called Real Wild Child. In the mock-up picture there are caricatures of some legends of Aus rock including that real wild child himself, Michael H. For those outside Sth Aus, Hutch is wearing a denim jacket and jeans, holding a beer in his hand. He's sitting at the bar with other Aussie musicians: Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Deb Conway and Crowded House (OK Neil Finn's a Kiwi). Tending the bar is ex-PM Bob Hawke. The CD-ROM itself covers the history of Australian music. It will be interesting to see how INXS' career is covered. If anyone gets a chance to check it out, let us know. My first concert was the 93 show in DC when they were headlining the modern rock station's festival. They rocked RFK Stadium! I can't remember the first single I bought but I can remember the first INXS shirt I got. I bought the one with a shadow of the band on the front with Need You Tonight/Mediate at the bottom. On the back was the words to Mediate with INXS KICK in the middle of the words to Mediate. INXS is not the only band I like. Rush is my other fave group. I also like Real Life (go get HAPPY--good CD!), Icehouse, Yes, Genesis (before Phil left), Simple Minds, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, most 80's rock, and some rap. The last concert I attended was YES in Fairfax, VA. Go see YES, they did a awesome show! It was Bryan Adams with The Hooters opening (around 1987). It was a pretty good show if I remember correctly, but don't ask me what happened to Adams' music since then. You'd have to pay me to listen to his latest stuff. Since then, I've been to numerous concerts ranging from Anthrax to Barry Manilow (he was actually quite entertaining), but it goes without saying which group always puts on the best shows. ;) Dennis From: Magentahue@aol.com Date: Sun, 2 Nov 1997 03:21:45 -0500 (EST) To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Subject: [INXS] British Vogue Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu Sorry for lighting a fire over Cary Ewles, Im sure the men on the list didnt care to hear about him, but this next post is Inxs related. My first concert was at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, I was about 10, and on the bill was Johnny O' Keefe, The Masters Apprentices, and Johnny Farnham! The first one I remember from my teenage years was Gary Glitter! My first album was a compilation called 24 Solid Hits with a blue and yellow psychadaelic cover from around ' 69 / '70. I loved the Aussie pop bands of the '70s; Sherbet, Hush, TMG, and progressed to INXS and U2 in my early 20s. One of the best concerts I saw in the 80s was The Clash!! Loved all the British "New Romantic" and "ska" stuff too! And whoever said Aussie concert tickets are very expensive, are more than right! Try this one- my U2 ticket booked through an agency because I couldn't queue or spend all day on the phone cost me a whopping $122. My first concert was INXS. In the summer of '86--I was just about to turn 16--my then boyfriend took me to the Listen Like Thieves concert at, of all places, the Illinois State Fair! It was a relatively small concert, much like the venues on the EW tour (ah, the circles of life!), and they of course blew the place away! Two things will always stick in my mind about that show. One, how all the guys had very long hair (Michael's was down to the middle of his back, as was Jon's), and two, the opening. They started with The Swing. Everything was pitch black, then all of a sudden you heard Jon's drums coming out of the darkness. Then, as the tempo rose to the second level (you all know what I'm talking about) a single light beamed down on Jon, jammin' away. The rest of the guys minus Michael were on the stage but playing in the darkness. Then Michael came running out in the darkness, sang the opening, "well it's the Swing," and at the symbol crash the whole stage lit up, and the show began! It was absolutely amazing (especially for a young impressionable16 year old getting her first taste of INXS!). Although every INXS concert I've been to has been fabulous, I can honestly say that none have topped that first one I saw back in '86! And, as they say, the rest is history . . . R.E.M. Splits With Drummer Bill Berry October 30 [17:30 EDT] -- After more than 17 years in one of the most influential bands of the last two decades, drummer Bill Berry has announced that he is leaving R.E.M. Berry, who formed the band along with Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, and Peter Buck in 1980, announced his decision on Thursday saying, "I've been playing drums since age nine. I'm at a point in my life where some of my priorities have shifted. I loved my seventeen years with R.E.M. but I'm ready to reflect, assess, and move on to a different phase of my life. The four of us will continue our close friendship and I look forward to hearing their future efforts as the world's biggest R.E.M. fan." The move comes as the group is writing songs and preparing to record its next album, and is planning a 1999 tour to coincide with that album's release. R.E.M.'s remaining members note that Berry will not be replaced in the band's permanent line-up, and that outside musicians will be brought in as needed for recording and touring. The group is quick to point out that the situation is a totally amicable one, and all four band members will visit the MTV area of America Online (keyword: "MTV Yack," then enter the arena) for a live chat Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern time to discuss the decision. For now, Berry says his future plans are undecided. "It's the end of an era for us... Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe... and that's sad," frontman Stipe said of the move. "I'm happy for Bill; it's what he really wants and I think it's a courageous decision. For me, Mike and Peter, as R.E.M., are we still R.E.M.? I guess a three-legged dog is still a dog. It just has to learn how to run differently." In all, the group has released 11 albums with Berry behind the kit, two of which (1991's "Out Of Time" and 1994's "Monster") went to number one. Their most recent effort, "New Adventures In Hi-Fi," debuted at number two on the charts last year, and came on the heels of a new $80 million contract with Warner. While the collective history of R.E.M. is rooted in the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Berry and bassist Mills have known each since their days in junior high school, however, they were hardly fast friends. In a 1990 interview with MTV's Kurt Loder, Berry said that his "rebellious" persona and Mills' studious, polite, straight-A personality were polar opposites, and that the two "really did despise each other." The two were finally brought together by a mutual friend who brought his musician pals together to jam. "We're all set up and everybody's there except the bass player," Berry explained. "So here I spent the last half hour setting up all these drums, and we're all down there tuning up waiting for the bass player, which is what we still do. And who should walk down the steps but Mike Mills. To this day, if I had to play the clarinet or the guitar, I would have packed my stuff and left, but I looked at the drums and I said, 'Oh boy, I'm stuck here. It's his house.'" [1.6MB QuickTime] Berry and Mills then buried their differences, and soon became, in Berry's estimation, best friends. The two hooked up with fellow UGA student Stipe and record store manager Buck in 1980. The four got together for the first time after Buck and Berry crossed paths, and tried to set up a jam session that almost never came together. "I said, 'A friend of mine up here plays bass. We've got bass and drums up here. Let's get together and see what happens,'" Berry said. "As it turns out, one of us didn't make it, so we bagged the idea. It never would have happened, but I saw Pete again three weeks later in a bar and we said, 'Let's just give it one more shot,' and we did, and got together, and it was great. It was like magic. So it almost didn't happen." [1.4MB QuickTime] On April 5, 1980, the band played their first formal gig at a party under the name Twisted Kites. Soon thereafter, they adopted the name R.E.M., and began playing out with increasing frequency. It was only a matter of months before the band impressed I.R.S. Records head Jay Boberg at a New Orleans show, and consequently landed a deal with the label. The first full-length release from Berry and company, 1983's "Murmur," offered up the dense mix of ringing guitars and cryptic lyrics that would be the band's hallmark for the next 14 years. After seven albums that helped to establish I.R.S. as a potent musical force, the band signed to Warner Bros. releasing its major label debut, "Green," in 1988. Since then, the band has released six albums for the label, and inked a new deal worth $80 million. Of course, the road wasn't always a smooth one for the band. In 1995, during the band's first tour in five years, Berry suffered a brain aneurysm. After a brief hiatus, Berry and the rest of the band returned to the road and finished the tour. "As sad as this is," Mills said of Berry's decision to leave the band, "the fact that Bill is still around to be my friend puts everything in perspective. I look forward to playing golf with Bill, and music with Michael and Peter." It was when that album with "Sanctify Yourself" came out. I was like 9 and went with my brother and some of his friends. My first album that I remember buying was Olivia Newton-John's Greatest Hits Volume 2. I still have it. And yes, it's an album. =) Aaah, the days of vinal. I ran over my Go-go's Beauty & The Beat album with my bed. I was moving my room around. I can't do that now because I have a waterbed. Ha! First 45...is a tough one. Maybe Nena's 99 Luft Balloons. I know the German version better than the English for some reason. I used to listen to my mum's Kingsmen 45 of louie Louie and I still can't understand the words. First crush was one of the following...Simon Lebon, John Taylor, Nick Rhoades, or Ralph Macchio. Oh my. That last one is a bit funny, but hey I'm sharing. He wasn't even a good actor, or cute for taht matter now that I think about it. I guess that's enough firsts for now! =) Take care all! "Slow punk" may be an oxymoron, but I can't think of any other way to describe it. Though I'm younger than many of you on the List, I can safely say that I still like *everything* I have ever listened to or liked. From the time I first really got into music (about 15 years ago or so) till now, I have never felt any guilt, shame, or embarrasment from anything. I still enjoy the early 80s new wave I listened to (bands like A Flock of Seagull, etc.) At the time I was too young to go out and buy the albums or go to the concerts, so I would have to move ahead to the mid 80s. In any case, I honestly can't remember what was my first concert -- I think it was Dead or Alive, but it might have been David Bowie... Oh yeah, I also saw the Damned somewhere in there (frightening band). Weird that I can't remember... The first show that I was really blown away at, though, was REM on their Document tour... Interestingly enough, the opener at the show was a then-unknown new band that Michael Stipe liked called the 10,000 Maniacs... The first album I bought was probably Thriller (and hey -- it's still a good album) but the first one that really made me obsess with music was Tears For Fears' "Songs from the Big Chair." Still one of my favorite discs of all-time. -- NKoth@worldnet.att.net -- kotharne@umdnj.edu nkoth@geocities.com -- nkoth@iname.com -- nkoth@yahoo.com UMDNJ-NJMS '00 -- http://www.umdnj.edu/~kotharne/ The SHARE Center -- http://www.umdnj.edu/shareweb/ An Excess of INXS -- http://www.umdnj.edu/~kotharne/inxs.html From: "Bischoff; Nicole L" To: "'inxs-list@iastate.edu'" Subject: RE: [INXS] HTML and nbsp Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 12:26:32 -0500 Sender: owner-inxs-list@iastate.edu Reply-To: inxs-list@iastate.edu speaking og html....is there a code to use to make an indent in the beginning of each paragraph?? Well, my first concert and proud to admit it  :) was the Eurythmics in 1986 or so.  The Revenge tour.  They were great, I was only a little nipper then and my Uncle took me but I can still remember when they played Missionary Man, the strobe light and the silver paper in the air, great effect.  It wasnt until a few years ago that I saw a live video of them and the concert was that one I went to.  So I have a video memory of my first concert.

The first time I saw INXS was on the KICK tour, then the X Factor tour.....ohhh to many to list  *laugh*  The best concert I ever saw INXS play was at the Sydney University (Refectory Building) in 1993.  Absolutely brilliant.  On the last song when they played Don't Change I was in front of Tim.  I reached up and touched his guitar, then I saw him look at me and he handed me his guitar to play for about twenty seconds.  I didn't have a clue but he was laughing and Michael was trying to sing over the top of my efforts...

Small things....hehe

Cheers

We often think of others as having the accent. It's funny to think of someone who thinks we talk different. In all honesty, if you started in Maine and worked your way SW to the San Diego part of California, you'd find the accents weakening as you go. I honestly see Californins as the least accented English speaking republic. As you correctly pointed out, no one thinks they have the accent, just others, so, if you're in CA, you're liable not to hear the accent. Since I'm not in CA, I do hear it. It's very light, but it's there! I honestly don't think there's any place in the world without an accent. Plus, just think what it would be like if we all spoke in the exact same way-- boring, I'm afraid. The different pronunciations keep it interesting. Nanci who has no accent whatsoever ;-) P.S. To make this conform to the INXS topic area, has anyone out there ever used an INXS interview/video/etc. to try to teach themselves an Aussie accent? Around the 9th grade or so, lots of my friends did.
