Hello to you all, This is a quick note to give you some updated info on the ROTO Pages. First and foremost, the ROTO Pages have moved. Please update your bookmarks and websites if you link back to them. ROTO Pages Index: http://www.enteract.com/~stazya/reach.html - note the email change too. If you've only linked to the Tribute Pages before, please link to the index from now on so people can see that there's more out there. You can still call it the Tribute Pages link. Also, if you haven't already, I'd really appreciate it if you could put a description behind the link - something to the effect of "a detailed listing and review of every known tribute site on the web" - but this is up to you. The old site will be up until November - with possible jump screens after that - but you'll be lucky if the links work and I won't be updating it from now on. As for the updates - there's new tribute sites, mailing lists, messageboards, memory books, networking, trading posts, pen pals, chat rooms, biography info and even a search engine. Basically everything I've been saying I would do. I can't believe the amount of updates there were. The site will look the same, but it's been revamped in structure (you'll never notice) and I've added a site map and "what's new" page so you'll know when there's new tribute pages etc. If you have or know of a site that isn't listed (*Please* check first), send it my way to be reviewed. If you've updated your site and would like me to review it again, just let me know. Future plans: A site of the day so every site gets a chance to be viewed. (Come on, admit it - with over 70 links, how many of you stopped after the first dozen or so? :-) Break up the tribute listing in some non-threatening, non-competitive and overly fair way so the page will download faster but still afford equal exposure to everyone. Possible scheduled chats if there's interest. And for those of you who've received this message several times, my apologies!@! Correct me if I'm wrong, but at his funeral, the narrator guy said that Bono always meant to get Michael a ring like that because he'd asked him for one, but he never did. Hence, the large Irish wedding band shaped flower bouqet. I take it Bono didn't know Michael had the ring? Or perhaps the narrator was wrong? Okay, I claimed SG is a huge U2 rip off - but since not a lot of people agree, I will explain my reasoning. I dont wish to 'prove my point' or anything, I just want to show where I am coming from, so you guys can see that I am not just making a base-less comparison. Anyway, since it is easier to rip off other peoples words than write my own, I am taking a post from the U2 list - I agree with it all - although I think she got the name of the SG song wrong.... i went to see SAVAGE GARDEN in Montreal last night since my friend is totally obsessed w/ them. it was general admission, so we were right in the front against the gate (center). there were mirror balls (disco balls) of all types of sizes all over the stage! (sound familiar - ie U2's mirrorball) the singer had a really bad imitation of bono's glasses and tried to dance like him throughout the show. remember at the end of PLEASE bono does that screaming thing with the microphone? well, the singer of savage garden did the exact same thing at the end of BRAKE ME, SHAKE ME! then at the end of I WANT YOU he screamed "no one tells me NO!" and he would scream NO and then point the microphone to the crowd and he did it 3 or 4 times. strangely, just like bono did when he performed MOFO at the MTV EUROPE AWARDS! at one point he even came out with a white satin robe, sound familiar??? he kept on puting one leg up and hopping on the other foot like bono did during popmart. then the blond guy who's on the cover of the album (i don't know his name) began introducing the band members and when he got to the guitarist he said, " and this is ------ (sorry, forgot his name too), the new Edge of the next millenium!" i'm pretty sure i heard that, because my friend heard the same. that's insulting!!! no one can ever replace EDGE! Okay, I have never watched SG that much, so I cant see the MH similarities (although that guy does look similar to MH when he was older). I really dont like them but I am big enough to appreciate they are hugely popular and must therefore have some talent that I just cant see. I am all for different taste, so if I cant see it, I dont really mind. But then again, I have just been told about one of their songs that is a rip-off of mediate. Hey U2 and INXS are my favourite 2 bands - so I could rip them both off! But then again, in the mid-late 80s U2 and INXS got compared all the time, so we might see the same thing and refer it to different bands - I dunno, I still think that guy thinks he is Bono! My take on SG is that they are a young band, and like most young bands, find their own indentity through experimenting with different styles and adopting what they see and like from other bands. INXS in 1982 certainly wasn't they same INXS in 1988, or 1997, etc. I'm not trying to say that INXS ripped anyone off, but they experimented, starting out as more of a new wave group (which was, incidentally, the most cutting-edge form of music at that time). Their later albums took on different styles. Some were funky, some edgy rock 'n' roll, some dance, etc. They borrowed influences from what they saw, and then a few years down the road, became the band to influence, not be influenced, to paraphrase Michael. I don't have a problem with SG--I actually like them. Yes, they are overplayed, but they are one of the few newer bands which we can proudly call a pure pop group. I miss pop music, and SG is some of the best pop younger generations can be exposed to on the radio these days (sheese--younger generations--I'm only 22!). SG have given two of my favorite bands--INXS and Duran Duran--nothing but respect. They give mention of the two groups as influences whenever they can. Who knows if they've done the same for U2? I'm guessing that with the respectful attitude SG has shown for other established bands that have influenced them, their imitation of U2 was meant as the sincerest form of flattery. Sorry so long, but I feel that a lot of people are unjustly harsh on SG. For a young band, they show extreme talent and I think it's unfortunate that their biggest release is their debut album, because they might not have the chance to show the world, on a large scale at least, that they are capable of becoming one of the established bands they so respect. From the post below, it would seem that the school year runs differently relative to the seasons than it does here. There are many all-year school experiments happening in communities all around the US. Burn, by Ed St John, was the first book post-michael's death to hit the shelves down here in Oz. Naturally, I went out and bought it. No I hear that it is offered Overseas on mail order and some shops, and that a few of you are scrounging around to find it. Two words, DON'T BOTHER! I sadly didn't come to appreciate Michael's work and the band until Michael had died, and hence I didn't know much about the band. This book painted a totally grotesque picture of the band and brought me to believe that it was on the verge of breaking up anyway. St John took quotes (made in good humour by members of the band over the years) and arranged them so as to distort the truth. I came to think that the guys were totally hooked on drugs and in the end, didn't really like Michael... as he had became eccentric, stoned and aggressive towards his friends. I just couldn't belive it! I couldn't bring myself to finish it and it wasn't until I had read interviews done with Paula and members of the band before and after his death, that I began to see things for what they were, and not what St John had shoved down my throat. My guesses are that he is in cahoots with 'St' Bob... aka Satan himself! If the band isn't an instant success, then the record companies don't want to waste their time or resources promoting the band. Perhaps maybe SG shrewdly called on these influences so they could develop a fan base from already established acts. Now that they are popular, they can develop their own style. But I'm not sure I would call SG a "rip-off" of INXS. For one I don't own their cd so I haven't heard it in its entirety :) But they have always acknowledged INXS's influence on them and how much they respect the band. -- Sue sue@mdc.net http://www.mdc.net/~sue Sender: inxslist@smtp.digitalcastle.com Errors-To: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Reply-To: inxslist@digitalcastle.com X-Listserver: Macjordomo 1b10 - Macintosh Listserver by Michele Fuortes Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 08:48:09 EDT From: CanneDo2@aol.com To: Multiple recipients of Subject: INXS: Re: AUST CONVENTION DATES In a message dated 98-09-02 00:40:29 EDT, you write: << , the Australian summer starts around Novemeber with pleasantly warm-cool weather and by mid-january it is stinky stinky hot... up to 43 degrees celsius in some places. >> I was in Northern Queensland in mid- November quite a while back and the weather was scorchin". They are quite reasonable on most of their stuff (CD's, Vid's) and shipping is only $2! It was only a rumor that the band chose him, although Jimmy did say that if they did continue, and they ever needed any help in the studio on any songs he would offer to help out. However ...it would be extremely difficult anyway considering Jimmy reformed his old band Cold Chisel, their new single "The things I love in you" debuted at no.10 this week here in Australia. Cold Chisel will then be doing an extensive tour of Australia, but I think that doesn't start until next year now. M.M. People wanted to make a bigger deal out of it then it was and Paula seemed to address it pretty well (and believeably to me) in the article I read...I wish I could remember which one it was but I think it was the one about her heading to Australia to see Kell after his surgery. I have to say I don't think that Paula under any circumstance would abuse her child any of them. It just doesn't appear to be in her nature. She is a vetern mom now with Tiger and the little terrible 2 demons would be something Paula is quite used to with having had 3 girls already. Also it seems to me that Paula has a wonderful support system in place for Tiger with Belinda and Michael's family. If Paula couldn't handle Tiger's 2s for a while she wouldn't have had to in my humble opinion. The point I'm trying to make is I don't think Paula would EVER hit any of her children and that I believe that bruise was nothing more than a everyday bump taken in by a little one's clumsy feet. I hope this doesn't become the next ax put into Paula's back. If a photographer was to catch any two year old at random they would probably catch a bruise some where on 80% of the kiddies (their legs..arms....kness...etc) -betty Sender: inxslist@smtp.digitalcastle.com Errors-To: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Reply-To: inxslist@digitalcastle.com X-Listserver: Macjordomo 1b10 - Macintosh Listserver by Michele Fuortes Date: Sun, 6 Sep 1998 16:12:12 EDT From: RuckyCakes@aol.com To: Multiple recipients of Subject: INXS: Re: VMAs All this chit chat of the VMAs reminds me last year the night of the VMAs (Sept 9th I think?) I was at an INXS concert !!!! Michael said something to the extent of "who needs the fucking VMAs tonight....I'd rather be here with you" or something like that...and the crowd of course agreed in unison :-) Wouldn't you? -betty Sender: inxslist@smtp.digitalcastle.com Errors-To: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Reply-To: inxslist@digitalcastle.com X-Listserver: Macjordomo 1b10 - Macintosh Listserver by Michele Fuortes Date: Sun, 06 Sep 1998 13:42:16 PDT From: "Shivaun Schulte" To: Multiple recipients of Subject: INXS: poll Monday will be the last day to vote on the poll on the groups name. That was in Thailand right enough!!! I am guessing if he can afford that he can afford a Porche. Apparently, he (Hutch) was a bit peeved when it became a smash hit at the box office, as such a boost could have given him a launch into a career he had always shown interest in. It did break my heart at the same time as thrill me, to see the boys (especially Michael) looking so young and vibrant performing those three songs - wish I could get those performances on tape! Which led me to wonder - why on earth doesn't MTV just do a weekend marathon of ALL VMA shows back to back so we could all sit happily with our VCR's at the ready? I was reading the September issue of Q magazine and they had a couple of paragraphs on stuff we've already discussed (possible charity show, possible name change to Farriss Brothers) but they also said: "INXS, who were recently dropped by Mercury records after their last album Elegantly Wasted only went to Number 16, before leaving the Top 75 after three weeks...." I don't remember hearing this before.
