G'day In The Sunday Telegraph 'Girl power for INXS An Australian female singer might front INXS when they perform at Stadium Australia's official opening next month. It is understood the band are considering a female vocalist to limit comparisons with their late frontman, MH. Former Baby Animals lead singer Suze DeMarchi would be a contender to perform two songs when the band headlines the entertainment extravaganza on June12. Jimmy Barnes, who recorded Good Times with INXS & sang with them at the Mushroom Records 25th Anniversary concert, will not repeat the performance for the opening. Despite persistent rumours after H's death that American artist Terence Trent D'Arby would join INXS, it is unlikely he will front the band next mth. Other names floated for the difficult position include former Southern Sons singer Jack Jones & Noiseworks vocalist Jon Stevens. INXS is keen to keep the identity of the replacement singer a mystery until they take the stage, but will hold a press conference to announce their involvement in the stadium event of the wk. Other acts scheduled to perform at the concert before the kick-off of the FIFA All Stars & Socceroos match include Phantom of the Opera star Rob Guest & the recently re-formed Men at Work. Now I am one that is far from any position to tell anyone what to do, but let me tell you a little story... Some years ago, some of my friends and I went to see an Aussie band "Caligula" at 'Reactor One' at Penrith Panthers club. This band had recently broken up, but got back together again and they had a Male singer. As the lights died down and the band came on stage, a female singer came out and replaced the male one! We were all so surprised (even some of the girls in our group) - it was a real shock to the system! She didn't sing some of their original songs *too* badly, but we felt she was trying to replace the original lead singer. There are really two things I want to bring up here: 1) If the the new lead singer for INXS is female, lets not go on our first impressions. Take a day or two to breathe and look at the concert again. If we don't like it the second time 'round - lets respect that! But lets not go on our first impressions and give this girl a chance. As per my post on the INXS list yesterday I expressed grief that I couldn;t make the trip down to Sydney from Brisbane because my exams coincided with the big event. Now I feel even worse. As some of you may or may not know, I didn;t become a 'recognised' INXS fan until Michael had died so I never had the opportunity to see the band in concert. I'm not overly depressed about that at all because there is nothing I can do about it (and I've had 18months to deal with it) but to pass on the opportunity again (even if Michael isn't there) because of obligations to my education, it is just even more heart wrenching because in a moment of despair I know I will feel as though I am taking advantage of the band again... and we must remember those comments made by their so-called record company (Ok so i know they were dumped) inclining that INXS no longer existed as a band (I am refering to a post by somebody;s plight to contact the relevent copyright holder of INXS music for an Indy film)when in fact this concert proves that they do (in some lose respect of the word) but that at the same time, their longetivity and future performances are marred with uncertainty due to Michael's death and their reluctance to replace him. Just me blowing off more steam... and to actually post something to the list as we are all a bit quiet lately... I think folks perhaps read something more into my post than I intended for them to get. I don't know that the band was "dumped", as Danielle put it. We prefer to think of our mishaps as the record company/contacts really not taking us seriously. Apparently, we're going about trying to get soundtrack rights in a very unique (i.e., "amateur") way. Most indies either have no music, local music from no name bands, or such a large budget that they really aren't indies in the true sense (4 million USD $ pics are still considered indies, but we would damn near kill for that budget). As I've mentioned to others on the list who have responded to my post, the contacts we have had/tried to have/have at this point have come from the oddest places. Rational and logical thinking have gone out of the window, and did so long ago. Our timing was absolutely the worst, to boot. In about 5 years, when somebody (perhaps from this list?...hint, hint, writers) starts to write about the re-emergence of INXS (something I am sure will happen, although certainly with a different sound), I'll be glad to contribute a chapter about how NOT to try to get in touch with a band in the hopes of using their material legally. If anybody else is contemplating this for their own films, I'll be glad to pass it along before then. It is truly dumbfounding. I truly believe that we were not and (to some degree, still)are not taken seriously about this, and, hence, we got the correspondence back that we did. I don't encourage anyone to try to contact a record company directly (except very small, "hands-on" ones) about ANY particular band. This is not something for the faint of heart. In the meantime, still looking for anyone who is going to concert in June. We can't afford to go from the US to there. Would LOVE to arrange a barter with someone who is going...we have a banner that we would like to have taken and erected (if possible) to welcome back the band (including the new singer, whomever she/he may be). We've missed them all terribly and want them back into our lives. Can arrange for any kind of shipping to Australia. In exchange, would like to have photos/t-shirts/etc. Again, would work out the expenses well in advance. I know we are not the only ones on this list that are interested in this. Time is of the essence, though. OK, and now for this whole Olympic Stadium stuff on June 12 (heh, I kept this at the bottom to see if you are still with me!) :) INXS has not yet officially announced their involvement with this concert, but it's about 90% certain. They will most likely perform two songs with a "special guest vocalist" (which will not be Terence Trent d'Arby as far as I know.) It's important to remember that the individual selected -- whether it be a female or male -- is just acting as a GUEST vocalist, and is not joining the band. The band has said all along that they are not interested in getting a new frontman, and nothing has changed on that front. As far as I know, the band has not yet selected the special guest vocalist, though a large number of people are on the short list. (Most of the names have been filtering around in the press already). Again, INXS' participation in the event is NOT yet confirmed, so I wouldn't go out and buy expensive nonrefundable plane tickets or anything like that just quite yet. -- nkoth@worldnet.att.net kotharne@umdnj.edu neil@inxsweb.com UMDNJ-NJMS 2000 -- http://www.umdnj.edu/~kotharne/ An Excess of INXS -- http://inxsweb.com/ Now Playing: Gene "Fill Her Up" CD5 X-From_: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Wed May 5 20:43:35 1999 Sender: inxslist@smtp.digitalcastle.com Errors-To: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Reply-To: inxslist@digitalcastle.com X-Listserver: Macjordomo 1b10 - Macintosh Listserver by Michele Fuortes Date: Wed, 05 May 1999 17:38:37 PDT From: "zoe firth" To: Multiple recipients of Subject: INXS: Re: Rumors, Info, Etc Short response to Neil (and others who have bothered to set me straight as they see it, too): I stand corrected about the band being dumped from Mercury. Hey everybody... Just me (again) - but there will be no more whinging - I have some rather hopeful news! I was listening to Searching on my EW CD @ some ungodly hour this morning & I suddenly had a mystifying thought... I grabbed my student planner and flicked to exam week... the week before exams is designated as study week, but my campus (and my campus only!) stages alternate exam timeslots... which means I could leave on Friday and get to Sydney for the concert! WHOO HOOO, right? Well, not exactly... of course heaps of ppl would rather have exams a week early so they get more holidays, so the university has a very tight screening process... you have to be sick, lost a loved one (and no celebrating Michael's life does not count unfortunately), going to the wedding of a close relative (anyone getting married??), have uncontrollable work commitments (not as an INXS-er), have a competitive sporting event, a religious conviction or a clash in your study timetable. all of these have to be documented and i have no reason other to go down to sydney for a monumental concert! However, i know many of you must be thinking 'tell them you're booked on a plane" but they have in very bold letters that plane travel is not an excuse seeings as they give details of exam week in Janurary (just not the specific days and times). So... I'm going to attach an accompaning letter stating that I have plans to possibly move interstate to study at uni and i need the extra week to find a place to live etc etc etc. That isn't half false... i am applying for a transfer to South Australia (the cut-offs are more placid there) but if I don't get the course I want, I'll stay here in Brisbane... however by the time I find out either way it would be too late to organise alternate times for sitting exams... I can only hope that my argument is solid and I get the earlier times... everybody put in a good word for me 'up there' (I'm not particularly religious but I'd like to think that if enough people wanted it to happen, it would) as if I can go I would be only too happy to pick up some stuff for everyone who is geographically disadvantaged. I stayed up all last night really excited... picturing myself getting of the bus and sleeping outside the stadium all night just to get a good spot! I Just hope this is one dream that can come true! Fingers crossed. Danielle PS I wish they would confirm these things earlier as I would be devastated if I went to so much trouble and got there and they didn't show! BTW was their performance at the M25 concert strongly rumoured about (I was offline at the time... otherwise I would've gone) or was it a complete suprise? Maybe their 'track record' in regards to dealing with the pres at the M25 concert is an indicator of how likely they are to show at the Stadium Australia concert. Also, does anyone know if (and where) you have to get the tickets?? Danielle (and anybody else interested) Tickets can be bought online from Ticketek at www.ticketek.com.au cheapest tickets are $72.50 AUD - $250 AUD each. A lot of money for a 2-3 song "concert" if they perform. I'm in Sydney and personally I will be holding out till it's official. Also this is supposed to be a soccer match schedulled so I doubt anyone will be allowed onto the field. I think a lot of people out there have high expectations about this being an INXS show,I think you'll be terribly dissappointed. Also I can't see any INXS merchandise being sold seeing how this is a FIFA WORLD CUP match and not a rock concert.I'm sure plenty of soccer t-shirts will be for sale.Still interested?? Gday people, long time since I've been on the list, just saying hello to all ...old and new... I am oddly disappointed by some of the news thats about at the moment. Aghast at the idea that there will be potentially only 4 new songs on the next to last INXS(?) album. But the thought of some more solo MH is awe inspiring .... everything on the radio just doesnt seem to cut it lately....more then usual. Anyway time will pass and we shall see what happens ....its sure to be interesting in any event. Of interest to me the other day was oddly enough having to listen to the song "Unchained Melody" Six times in a row :( The purpose was for recording it for funeral music for the defacto of one of my mothers long time friends and......after doing that, It made remarkable sense when listening to Searching and Everything of Elegantly Wasted......It just seemed that they were very similar at that point (Searching and Unchained Melody)..certainly in mood....Unchained Melody was this guys favourite song apparently... It appears to me that some of the songs on EW would not be out of place at a funeral...Michael was lyrically in a reflective mood, an almost angry/melancholic sit.. one might say.....as if there was something to fight. But the solo album will lyrically be very rich with Michaels attitude before Nov22.....and that will in itself be very interesting let alone the music or his vocal talent. Anyway good to be back :)... Michael Kick Talon By the way thy guy referred to above (defacto of my mothers long time friend) also hung himself :(, an all too familiar and wasteful event that we all loath personally on this list no doubt. I haven't got this cd yet, but that Michael interview is from 1982. There is footage of that interview on the 'Australia Now' video that was released in Australia back in 1984. What does he talk about in the interview? I'll see if it's the same as on the video. It will cost me $100 just to get to Sydney... & then to come up with $72? In relation to the $250 tickets, for that lower price they probably stick you in some dark corner behind the stage... and if they are going to televise it I would be just as content to get a better view of it on TV. Now I know that it isn't the same and that it may be the last and only time I could ever get to see them live, but although i consider myself a most devoted fan, I have to be realistic and face the stark revelation that I just don;t have that sort of money to spend on 4 songs... ableit the uncertainty of them even appearing! Oh why couldn't it be like the M25 concert? (how all you had to do was take a phone bill). To those who asked, I think the ticket price would include the soccer game. I should have anticipated that the prices would be astronomical because afterall, it is the opening of a stadium that the Australian government would have no hope of paying off until another 50 years! (Ok slight exaggeration there... ) >I think a lot of people out there have high expectations about >this being an INXS show,I think you'll be terribly dissappointed. >Also I can't see any INXS merchandise being sold seeing how >this is a FIFA WORLD CUP match and not a rock concert.I'm sure >plenty of soccer t-shirts will be for sale.Still interested?? Yeah, I know that it wouldn't be 'an INXS' concert in the true sense of the word, and I doubt also if anything is going to be sold with their name on it... although if anybody is going and they do see something, I will be happy to reimburse them for the costs (if they would be so kind as to get me one of whatever) and rather than the whole disposable camera idea, I would be happy to pay for duplicates of any photos taken. Although... if by some miracle I were to come into money sometime soon I would go at the drop of the hat... I would dearly just love to be there as support for the guys...(i would go at lengths to make my presence felt... banner and all) I can't imagine how hard it would be for them to get up and play with some one other than Michael. I just hope that who ever they get to 'replace' him doesn't try to sound like him because that would most definetely not work out seeings as Michael was always his own person and never tried to copy anyone else himself. I think it would be a good step in the healing process for all of us if that person were to emit their own method of singing the songs chosen... we might compare, but at least we will respect that person for not trying to take the place of Michael. I also think that it wouldn't really matter if they chose someone well known or not... but that at least if they chose some one we have heard before we will know for sure whether or not they naturally agree with Michael's 'sound' or if they tried to capture it intentionally... I mean could you imagine the uproar a unknown would get if they unavoidably sounded so much like Michael? It would be nice, but at the same time I know that there are people out there who, in their grief, would use it against that person's credibility in order to maintain Michael's uniqueness (hence significance) in their lives INeXceSs. Just my opinion on the whole thing. Slightly downhearted... Hi everybody Last night, I was lying in bed contemplating INXS performing live with a new singer and how they were going to meet and rehearse together... how the other band members will feel towards this 'new' member, where they will practice, if in fact they will play and on on. Anyway, it got a bit carried away (as things do when you're suffering from insomnia) and I began picturing Michael at his last rehearsal and replaying the TV footage of him singing The Loved One over and over in my head. Anyway, I get very perplexed and somewhat in need for a distraction, so I lean over and look at my clock radio. 3:24am. Out of pure instinct, I turned on the radio (the rather novel thought that an INXS may, by some freak of nature, be on) and I heard a familar rift. For about 5 seconds (as I groped for the volume control so as to turn the music up to an audible level) I went through that whole 'Ollie Olsen and Michael on the beach hearing a guitar rift from some guys radio in the distance and mistaking it for an INXS song' regime. When I turned it up, there was Michael mid-way through the second verse of The Loved One! (I AM DEAD SERIOUS!!!). So anyway, I sat there, in awe, listening to The Loved One (btw, it was the Kick version), hoping, as I always do that a miracle would happen and another INXS song would follow. As it wasn't 2am (during which time they play 2 o'clock 2-ups for an hour) my hopes were dim, but then... TLO finishes and almost as quickly, Wild Life came on!!! MMM were playing their early morning CD side and today's choice was KICK!!! I was ecstatic, to say the least. Song after song I turned the radio up louder and louder... until my roomate was awoken by the racket of the music and me thumping around like a chook with it's head cut off and I was reduced to headphones. When Never Tear Us Apart came on I was almost reduced to tears because right as Michael started singing, the rain outside picked up so much that it was almost deafening on the tin roof above me and a big wind picked up, blowing my wooden venetians so hard that it knocked over my guitar... and, like a domino effect wrenched the headphones out of their sockets. So there I was, in a dark room, listening to NTUA full pelt as rain poured through the window and wind all around me sent birthday cards and loose paper flying around the room. i would have totally cracked if they had played By My side because those lines 'In the dark of night, those small hours, uncertain and anxious, I need to call you' really applied to my present situation (barring the last 2 lines as I felt strangely at ease with all the havoc going on around me). About the same time I began thinking that I should line up a blank audio tape should they say anything afterwards... but in the dark (and cold) I was reluctant to leave my bed and i didn't have the foggiest where I could find a blank tape. Anyway, after Calling All Nations, they had a break of songs and they played a collage of voice-overs that had to do with Michael... a newsreader announcing the death, Tim (I think) talking about how he heard in the car and was just shocked, the priest talking at the funeral about Michael's untimely death, Molly Meldrum saying something, Michael Gudinski reflecting on the impact MH had on industry and how he would be missed and finally, the coroner reading out his findings... the whole thing lasted about 30 seconds. After the last song played the Dj said something like (this is as close to word-to-word I could re-call) this: "Good morning, you've just been listening to MMM early morning CD side. That was INXS and Kick.. undoubtably one of the world's best albums. Very sad - that chain of events we aired just now... what's it been, 3years? No Two years already since Hutchence hanged himself in a Sydney Hotel room? It was one of those horrible deaths that just shocks you to the bone... I know I was. But, we should be hearing more from him soon. Hutchence solo album out next month and also next month, the remaining members of INXS are performing at the Stadium Australia opening... I'm sure we'll soon be hearing more about that. And speaking of INXS... just breifly... Paula Yates - you know, Michael Hutchence's former lover who he had the baby, Heavenly Hiraani Tigerlily, with - this is news just in. A British Newspaper was forced to apologise to Ms Yates for writing an article on her that claimed that she was broke and that she moved out of her apartment because she owed money. This isn't true... and now I'm guessing Yates would be far from broke seeings as the paper paid Yates and undisclosed sum in damages.' Mmmm, I heard about that eviction rumour, but I saw holes through the whole in debt thing because I read some where shortly afterwards that Yates had spent 15K on building Tiger a bedroom adjoining hers. What I think it is, is that Yates secretly moved out of the apartment and bought her own house (she mentioned she was looking forward to buying her own house in a recent interview too)... and she went about it so well, the tabloids had no idea where she was living and wanted to draw her out of the woodwork... afterall, a court suit would have to have her new address written somewhere. Just my far fetched conspiracy theory of the week! But then again, if she isn't broke, how come she sent Belinda to Australia in Feebruary to try and extract money from Tiger's trust??? That poor woman's life has so many twists and turns (ableit many twisted and manipulated and conjured from the press' imagination) than a Spelling soap opera! -Danielle- X-From_: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Fri May 7 01:11:51 1999 Sender: inxslist@smtp.digitalcastle.com Errors-To: nanci@smtp.digitalcastle.com Reply-To: inxslist@digitalcastle.com X-Listserver: Macjordomo 1b10 - Macintosh Listserver by Michele Fuortes Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 05:08:40 GMT From: "Curiouser & Curiouser" To: Multiple recipients of Subject: INXS: Shivers Hi everybody, C'est moi (remnants of my French classes), Danielle (the eternal chatterbox). I was watching the first episode of Good News Week Nite Lite on Channel 10 (Australia)last night and they had this band called the Gadflys play songs live throughout the set. One of the members was the show's host, Paul McDermott (who is also accredited with composing the theme song, but known as Paul Mac in the credits). Anyway, I wasn't really watching it all as I was busy channel surfing.. however I watched the last five minutes and after they GNW team had signed off the band fired up. The dreary bass rifts sounded really familiar, but it didn't click until Paul 'Mac' started singing 'I've been contemplating suicide'... upon which time the penny dropped and I realised that they were playing Shiver, (a cover of anyway) from the Dogs In Space soundtrack. I hit record on the player and caught the rest of the song from the second line onwards. Anyway, I thought it very strange that they were playing such a low tempo song that has such sinister messages (suicide?) on what is supposed to be a comedy show. Ever since GNW started on 10 (there's plain old Good News Week on Sundays and now there is GNW Nite Lite as well) I've become a fan of Paul McDermott (who isn't bad looking if I might say so myself... nor is he not bad at singing I've just found) and have begun to plunder in my little mind as to whether he had seen the movie and (at a stretch) was a fan. I mean, it could just be that he liked the song, but it did seem VERY out of place!! Also on Shiver, when I was growing up, I heard that song all the time somewhere and always drove my parents nuts singing 'down my sp-i-i-i-i-ne' (they were the only words, I as a mere 6-yearold could muster), but the version I always heard wasn't from the movie soundtrack. Could have been a very young McDermott singing it back then too (it was a man's voice). But anyway, can anybody tell me if the version on the soundtrack was the original, or if the version I grew up with on the radio was. Also, if anyone knows who sang the latter version (with the male singer), I would like to know that too. There is one by The Birthday Party (Nick Cave's band)...that is the original from around 1979. Also on the soundtrack is a version by Marie Hoy & Friends. There was a version of 'Shivers' released by 'The Screaming Jets' a few years back, around 1993 I think it was. Did quite well think it made the top 10. Matthew.
