Michael Hutchence's Estate Worth Far Less Than Expected

INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997, left a strong musical legacy, but apparently little else. Reports from Australia indicate that despite estimates of tens of millions of dollars, Hutchence's estate might be relatively worthless, perhaps less than $60,000 Australian (just over $31,000 U.S.), which, after taxes, could leave his survivors with nothing.

Hutchence's will, dated October 1996, specified that the first $1 million Australian from the estate should be donated to Greenpeace and Amnesty International. After that, half of the remaining monies were to be put in a trust fund for Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily--his daughter with the late Paula Yates--until she turns 25, with the rest being split between his parents, brother, step-sister, and the now-deceased Yates. The Hutchence estate executor has indicated that most of the matters have been finalized save for the sale of guitars and old paintings that the singer owned and kept in a safety deposit box in Monaco.

Members of Hutchence's family are balking at the news, questioning the validity of the financial projections. His mother, Patricia Glassop, told the Australian newspaper The Herald Sun, "Would anyone seriously believe that Michael did not want to leave anything to his family, including Tiger? He drove an Aston Martin, his personal effects were stored in homes around the world...yet we are supposed to believe he owned none of these things."

INXS recently announced plans to tour North America with new singer Jon Stevens beginning May 30 in Anaheim, California.
